Summary

Left rattled by the events of Dark Knights: Metal, Bruce Wayne must come face to face with the ultimate evil spawned from the Dark Multiverse。 One part Batman one part Joker。 The Batman Who Laughs。

"A Batman who laughs is a Batman who always wins。"

The mastermind behind Dark Nights: Metal, Scott Snyder, gives you a look inside the most terrifying version of Batman ever! He and superstar artist Jock (Batman: The Black Mirror) kick off a chain of events that makes Dark Nights: Metal seem like child's play。

The Batman Who Laughs not only survived his fight with The Joker at the end of Dark Nights: Metal, but is now enacting a sinister plan across the Multiverse--something both terrifying and oddly familiar。 When Bruce Wayne realizes the only way to stop this madman is to kill him, he must consider violating the very rule Batman can't ever break 。。。 the rule that created this insatiable villain--the Batman Who Laughs!

As Bruce begins to deduce that his current life is somehow wrong and that all the mistakes he's made are somehow connected, the Batman Who Laughs unleashes a brand-new evil。 Enter one of the most punishing Batmen of the Dark Multiverse: the Grim Knight!

Collects The Batman Who Laughs #1-7 and The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1。

I can't really recommend this book。 The story was interesting。 The art was good but it was hard to read。 Much of the dialogue was written in red on gray background。 There was a dramatic reason for this which might have been effective if it wasn't illegible。 I still don't know what some of those word balloons said。 The 3 stars I gave it were based on art and as much storytelling as I could discern。 It was interesting, but a bit darker than I tend to enjoy。 I can't really recommend this book。 The story was interesting。 The art was good but it was hard to read。 Much of the dialogue was written in red on gray background。 There was a dramatic reason for this which might have been effective if it wasn't illegible。 I still don't know what some of those word balloons said。 The 3 stars I gave it were based on art and as much storytelling as I could discern。 It was interesting, but a bit darker than I tend to enjoy。 。。。more

Not impressed。 The art seemed unfinished and it did not live up to the hype。 Story-2Art-2

Waited so long to read this and there were just too many plots and not enough linking it all together。 There were a lot of great ideas but everything was just so scattered and wrapped up so quickly that it left you dissatisfied。 I was interested to see the storyline behind the Robins but they literally popped up once with barely a mention。 The character of the Grim Knight completely outshined the Batman who Laughs from character design to origin story。 The laugher’s proportions made him seem so Waited so long to read this and there were just too many plots and not enough linking it all together。 There were a lot of great ideas but everything was just so scattered and wrapped up so quickly that it left you dissatisfied。 I was interested to see the storyline behind the Robins but they literally popped up once with barely a mention。 The character of the Grim Knight completely outshined the Batman who Laughs from character design to origin story。 The laugher’s proportions made him seem so non-threatening, which contrasts how creepy his facial features were done and don’t match the cover appearance of him sitting on the throne looking massive next to the Robins。 。。。more

I really love this。 It’s way up there for me。TBWL is a terrifying villain, and I spent most of this book expecting normal Batman to lose。 That’s how intimidating this dude was。 The backstory to Grim Knight is awesome, and calls back to Year One type shit。 Fuckin loved this。 The art is amazing。 The lettering was a little hard to read sometimes, but not a huge deal。Awesome comic book!

Dark as hell, beautiful artwork, amazing villians。 Excellent。

I found my feelings about this book ebbed and flowed throughout, ranging from "not sure I'm into this" to "ok。。。。I'm getting it" to "I'm actually enthralled"。 It was a weird read。 Some over-the-top self-reflection that I'm not usually a fan of as it's so often repetitive in every Batman story。 However, this one felt like a new twist and approach。 There is of course the usual insane (and totally unbelievable!) death-defying, presciently perceptive, counter strike that we all know and love。 But he I found my feelings about this book ebbed and flowed throughout, ranging from "not sure I'm into this" to "ok。。。。I'm getting it" to "I'm actually enthralled"。 It was a weird read。 Some over-the-top self-reflection that I'm not usually a fan of as it's so often repetitive in every Batman story。 However, this one felt like a new twist and approach。 There is of course the usual insane (and totally unbelievable!) death-defying, presciently perceptive, counter strike that we all know and love。 But hey, it seems to work! The Batman Who laughs is an icon of modern comic book villains。 I really enjoyed this one and would have given it a four out of five if it wasn’t retreading the same emotional ground that he brought up when he was first introduced。 That being said I would recommend this to any Batman reader。

The story centers around (a) Batman being infected by a Joker toxin and having to take on the Batman Who Laughs (a Joker-Batman hybrid made of hard rock, pleather, and dark energy) and the Grim Knight (basically Ben Affleck’s Batman gone rogue)。 It’s cool to see Bruce struggle with his fear of literally turning into his own worst enemy。 It’s odd that the entire Bat-family is absent but referenced by the villain。 There’s cool subplot with Jim and James Gordon that’s really a highlight of the arc。 The story centers around (a) Batman being infected by a Joker toxin and having to take on the Batman Who Laughs (a Joker-Batman hybrid made of hard rock, pleather, and dark energy) and the Grim Knight (basically Ben Affleck’s Batman gone rogue)。 It’s cool to see Bruce struggle with his fear of literally turning into his own worst enemy。 It’s odd that the entire Bat-family is absent but referenced by the villain。 There’s cool subplot with Jim and James Gordon that’s really a highlight of the arc。 Overall, I’d recommend reading it once。 I want to read The Infected, so I picked this up。 I’m not 100% sold on the whole Metal group of stories, but I certainly don’t hate them。 Pros: FunJim and James Gordon’s relationship on full displaySome interesting moments from Bruce’s past“Hidden” messages in different color letters are funA solid endingCons:The lettering is somewhat difficult to readThere are some moments that stretch my bounds of disbelief (Joker’s heart toxin? 4。5/5Low key like this a little more than the Dark Nights Metal event。 I love this exploration into what Bruce would do if he chose a different path。 I thought the ending was brilliant!

Me ha parecido brutal! No soy experto en la historia de Batman, pero parece que aquí llevaron al límite a Bruce Wayne, de forma que te mantiene en tensión hasta el final。

Really enjoyed this。 I’m not following the whole character arc across all titles but I found this tale centred on the Batman who laughs much easier to follow than Dark Knights Metal which left me confused at times。 The idea of Batman being corrupted by his basest form was a strong idea。 My favourite quote was:‘The Batman who laughs spoke about learning from a bat - it being the only mammal that can fly。 It’s an example of what we can achieve if we embrace our primal nature。 Maybe it’s the opposi Really enjoyed this。 I’m not following the whole character arc across all titles but I found this tale centred on the Batman who laughs much easier to follow than Dark Knights Metal which left me confused at times。 The idea of Batman being corrupted by his basest form was a strong idea。 My favourite quote was:‘The Batman who laughs spoke about learning from a bat - it being the only mammal that can fly。 It’s an example of what we can achieve if we embrace our primal nature。 Maybe it’s the opposite。 A bat isn’t designed for flight the way a bird is。 A bat’s flight is about defying what comes naturally and achieving what’s hard。 What’s painful but sublime。 That’s Batman isn’t it。 Defy your nature。 Defy everything to be better than you’re supposed to be。 Batman isn’t about knowing who you are but who you want to be’ 。。。more

I really enjoyed this one。 The Batman Who Laughs is the best thing to come out of Metal。

A compelling, interesting, complex, and beautifully illustrated work。 Sort of like a Dark Mirror version of Into the Spider-Verse, exploring what it means to be Batman and what makes him so special。 Really a wonderful read, and one I’d even recommend to non-comics readers as a way to expose them to why you can love the genre and expect so much from it。

When alternate universes involved, there is potential for a good story。 I didn’t know that this was a must read so I went into it without any preconceived notions。 I very much enjoyed the book。

Eight issues of nonsense and I still couldn’t tell you what The Batman Who Laughs was about! Far as I can tell, it’s just an excuse to trot out the derivative Judge Death-ish Batman Who Laughs villain from Dark Nights: Metal for another barney, just ‘cos。 He’s brought with him the Grim Knight (aka Punisher Batman) from the Dark Multiverse and together they want to, I guess, take over Gotham or something mindlessly generic。 Scott Snyder reunites with his Black Mirror artist Jock for a much less i Eight issues of nonsense and I still couldn’t tell you what The Batman Who Laughs was about! I see him in more than a few books so he probably is。 I don’t get it though。 Like the Grim Knight, he’s a wholly superficial and uninteresting bad guy。 And how does he see through that spiked metal band over his eyes anyway?? Utterly boring, instantly forgettable, badly conceived story, but then what did I expect for a sequel(ish) to the terrible Dark Nights: Metal? The Batman Who Laughs is a tedious joke of a comic。 。。。more

Following the events of Dark Nights: Metal, the dark multiverse is introduced to the DC Universe and paved the way for dark versions of Batman to reign havoc。 Among these alternate evil creatures born from the fears of people is the Batman Who Laughs from Earth-22 who succumbed to the Joker’s toxin and lost his sanity。 By far the most chilling version of Batman, he’s now enacting a sinister plan across the Multiverse and has Bruce Wayne right at the heart of it。 Although the future now lies in Batman’s hands as he’s forced into contemplating breaking the one rule he’d never break, the Batman Who Laughs brings into play another Batman whose mere presence crushes all hopes of life: the Grim Knight。 Facing these deadly threats, Batman now has to play a very perilous game and seek help in the dark corners of Gotham if he wants to win this war。 Gordon and his son attempt to help Batman as well as Alfred but can they together help Batman face the ultimate evil version of himself and save Gotham in the process? The story is dense but man, is it terrifying and riveting。 It might not make complete sense but I thought this was one of the stronger Batmen stories I've ever read and would love to see a film version of this。 。。。more

The only thing that kept this from a five-star rating from me was that the lettering is extremely unfriendly。 I get that spiky red-on-black and red-on-gray word balloons are all dark and atmospheric, but they're also damnably hard to read。 They get in the way of the story rather than enhancing it。 The only thing that kept this from a five-star rating from me was that the lettering is extremely unfriendly。 I get that spiky red-on-black and red-on-gray word balloons are all dark and atmospheric, but they're also damnably hard to read。 They get in the way of the story rather than enhancing it。 。。。more

The Batman Who Laughs finds Batman fighting a different Batman from the dark multiverse, a Batman who experienced events that led him to become the Joker。 As bodies start to be found across Gotham, all of them seemingly to be Bruce Wayne, he realises that the Batman who Laughs is dispatching every Bruce Wayne he can find across the multiverse and has now come for him。 However in order to protect Gotham from this new threat, the Batman from this universe must also abandon who he is and become som The Batman Who Laughs finds Batman fighting a different Batman from the dark multiverse, a Batman who experienced events that led him to become the Joker。 As bodies start to be found across Gotham, all of them seemingly to be Bruce Wayne, he realises that the Batman who Laughs is dispatching every Bruce Wayne he can find across the multiverse and has now come for him。 However in order to protect Gotham from this new threat, the Batman from this universe must also abandon who he is and become something else entirely to defeat this new threat。 This is the first book I have read from this universe。 Having read it now, I feel I would have benefited from reading Batman Metal first but despite this it does still work as a stand alone feature。 This is probably the darkest, most violent and bloodiest depiction of Batman's fight against evil I have seen during my time reading the Dark Knight graphic novels and I enjoyed it greatly! It's certainly unlike any of the other stories I have previously read。 The story itself is well plotted although it does require a lot of focus when we get into the various histories of all of the Bruce Waynes from the multiverse as a number of times I did get lost and had to reread parts。 The illustrations throughout are bold and striking and really bring this dark world to life。 If you didn't think Batman could get any darker then you were wrong 。。。more

Everything old is new again。 Here is Scott basically retelling the Batman: Venom story along with a "What if the Joker was Bane?" kinda schtick that doesn't really live up to expectations。 No matter what you call him, the Batman Who Laughs is really just the Joker, all over again, and this is very low on the rung of great Joker stories。Fucking love Jock's art though, still。 Grade: C- Everything old is new again。 Here is Scott basically retelling the Batman: Venom story along with a "What if the Joker was Bane?" kinda schtick that doesn't really live up to expectations。 No matter what you call him, the Batman Who Laughs is really just the Joker, all over again, and this is very low on the rung of great Joker stories。Fucking love Jock's art though, still。 Grade: C- 。。。more
